‘Fat cat’ needed just one more life

Sparky didn't get his 15 minutes of fame, but he deserves a/an/the minute or two he's getting here.

Sparky was a/an/the proverbial "fat cat." His owners, Tonia and Mike Martin of Escondido, claim he once tipped a/an/the scales at 45 pounds. His most recent official weighing found him at 39 1/2 pounds. He was about a/an/the size of a/an/the 3-year-old child.

The Martins once took Sparky to a/an/the fat cat contest in Encinitas. "When some of a/an/the other owners saw (Sparky), they turned around and headed back to their cars," said Tonia.

Sparky's prize was a/an/the year's supply of a/an/the diet cat food, a/an/the food he had eaten his entire life. He lost a/an/the few pounds after a/an/the Martins limited his feedings and reduced portions, but began putting on weight again after developing arthritis.

The 14-year-old feline came to our attention recently. Needing to see him to believe it, I visited a/an/the Martins two weeks ago, planning to write a/an/the story on a/an/the cat.

When they stepped on a/an/the scale with him, his weight was down substantially. Taking that and other symptoms they noticed into consideration, a/an/the Martins took Sparky to a/an/the vet a/an/the next day.

The news wasn't good. Sparky had terminal cancer and kidney failure and his nine lives had pretty much run out. He died Monday with his loving owners close by.

He wasn't famous, but Sparky had a/an/the great life.
